What is Schizophrenia?

What is schizophrenia? Think you know the answer to this question? You may be surprised at the facts that you will find within this article in relation to the true meaning of this mental disorder.

To answer the above question (what is schizophrenia?), we should first talk about what does not apply to this condition. Thanks to popular culture, this term has been largely taken out of context throughout the past ten, or so, years. Many people believe that multiple personality disorder (or “split personality”) disorder applies to this type of mental disease, though this is not true. Schizophrenia is characterized as a psychiatric disease that causes hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thought.

People that are affected by this disorder often have a hard time relating to the world around them. They often create ideas and scenarios that are false, though they tend to strongly believe in them. There is no evidence that this type of mental confusion relates to a person developing a split personality, though it is possible for a person to suffer from both disorders. Many people throughout time have wondered why this mental imbalance happens to certain people, though there has yet to be any sort of concrete explanation.

Many experts believe that this mental state is a combination of environment, chemical imbalances within the brain, and genetics. However, no one cause seems to be the sole purpose for this disorder. Interestingly, studies have found that schizophrenics tend to have a high level of domaminergic activity within the mesolimbic pathway of the brain. Usually, this type of disease is treated with antipsychotic medications, which tend to work relatively well. Now that you know the answer to the original question (what is schizophrenia?), you can easily separate fiction from reality when it comes to this mental state.

Schizophrenia affects very few people (less than 0.4% of the population), though it seems to be a popular disorder when it comes to movies and television shows. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the disorder has yet to be concretely defined, and it continues to plague the mind of psychological experts. However mysterious it may be, this mental condition is rather interesting to explore.

So, what is schizophrenia, exactly? Well, we know that it is a mental imbalance that can be caused by a number of things – in short, nobody is one hundred percent certain. Either way, those that have this disease can usually seek effective help.
