Limitations in Psychiatry
To say that psychiatry has gone through some tough times throughout history would be an understatement. Still, there are some limitations in psychiatry that must be acknowledged.
One of the largest limitations in psychiatry stems from the fact that a lot of psychiatric practices and treatments are based upon theory. Many believe that treating various mental illnesses such as depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder as physical condition is a mistake. Still, those that practice this form of medicine continue to treat patients in a physical manner, rather than merely dealing with various degrees of mental behavior.
Of course, in order to criticize this mental health practice in this manner, one would have to ask the question: how is any mental disorder to be proven? The fact is that many disorders are diagnosed based upon one assumption or another, though many people within the nation are quite frequently misdiagnosed. How can this happen? Though this field has come a long way from the time of the Ancient Greeks, psychiatry is still (largely) a crapshoot.
If we think back to the time of treatments such as electroshock therapy, we can easily see how one psychiatric treatment may have been ok years ago, but is considered barbaric today. Now, compare that form of “treatment torture” to the hundreds of mind altering medications that are offered today (with their own set of torturous side effects), and you may begin to see how the limitations of psychiatry effect the field as a whole.
While it is certain that many people within the world are battling various mental diseases, we cannot be sure that we fully understand any one of these ailments. As it stands, this field is progressing every day, and what may have been understood yesterday is far from comprehended today. In this manner, psychiatry really places a definitive understanding upon things that cannot be considered tangible in any manner. Clearly, this field has a long way to go before all mental illnesses can be properly diagnosed and accurately treated.
As you can see, the limitations in psychiatry are vast. However, this does not mean that the field is useless – only, it does need to be a bit more open for improvement. Within a world that is quick to medicate, we must ask ourselves whether or not modern psychiatry is all it’s cracked up to be.
